Glassdoor Announces Awards Criteria for the Top CEOs in 2018

Glassdoor Announces Awards Criteria for the Top CEOs in 2018Glassdoor Announces Awards Criteria for the Top CEOs in 2018 Is your Chief Executive Officer (CEO) an extraordinary leader that employees love working for? If so, you can help your company and CEO win a 2018 Glassdoor Employees Choice Award for the Top CEOs (Note, rebranded for 2018 to Top CEOs formerly known as Highest Rated CEOs).Today, Glassdoor is excited to share the 2018 awards criteria to help employees and employers better understand what it takes to be considered.Unlike other workplace awards, there is no self-nomination process and no costs involved. To win a Glassdoor Employees Choice Award, winners are determined based on feedback provided by those who really know a CEO best - his or her employees. If employees dont share reviews on Glassdoor during the year-long eligibility timeframe, a CEO cannot be considered. Thats why we encourage all employees to share a review today. When providing a company review, employees are asked to share their opinion on some of the best reasons to work for their employer (pros), any downsides (cons), and are encouraged to provide advice to management. Employees are also asked to rate several factors tied to their employment experience, including sentiment around their CEOs job performance, in addition to rating workplace attributes like senior management among others. Specifically, when rating their CEO on Glassdoor, employees are able to choose from one of three options approve, disapprove or no opinion of the CEO.For the 2018 Employees Choice Awards recognizing the Top CEOs, Glassdoor will feature six distinct categories in multiple countries. For each category, company reviews and ratings from current and former employees will be considered between May 2, 2017 and May 1, 2018. Reviews submitted after May 1, 2018 will not be considered for the 2018 awards. While Glassdoor accepts reviews from former employees within five years of leav ing a company, for the Employees Choice Awards, only reviews from former employees who have left the company in 2018 or 2017 will be considered. In addition, each list of winners is based on local-employee feedback shared on Glassdoor. For example, reviews from U.S.-based employees will be used to determine if a CEO is eligible for a U.S. list , while reviews from UK-based employees will be used to determine if a CEO is eligible for the UK list . A CEO can win a Top CEO award in multiple countries. To determine the 2018 winners, quantity, quality and consistency of reviews and ratings will be taken into account during the eligibility timeframe. The following information sheds mora light on these three areas 1. For quantity of reviews , a minimum number of ratings are required across two leadership attributes that employees can rate when submitting a company review . They include CEO job performance and senior management. If there are not enough ratings across both or either of th e two leadership attributes, a CEO will not be considered. As part of the algorithm led by Glassdoors data science team, a CEOs job performance is mostly taken into account, along with other factors including an employers senior management rating. To be considered for a specific category, a CEO and employer must meet the following requirements during the eligibility timeframe100 Top CEOs U.S. large companies At least 100 ratings across the two leadership attributes from U.S.-based employees At least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe.50 Top CEOs U.S. small & medium companies At least 35 ratings across the two leadership attributes from U.S.-based employees Less than 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe.50 Top CEOs UK At least 35 ratings across the two leadership attributes from UK-based employees At least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe.25 Top CEOs Canada At least 25 ratings across the two leadership attributes f rom Canada-based employees At least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe.10 Top CEOs France At least 20 ratings across the two leadership attributes from France-based employees At least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe.10 Top CEOs Germany At least 20 ratings across the two leadership attributes from Germany-based employees At least 1,000 employees at the end of the eligibility timeframe. For all categories, a CEO and employer must also have at least a 3.0 overall company rating, and at least a 3.0 senior management rating during the eligibility period. Plus, a CEO must be currently in the role and featured on their employers profile on Glassdoor as of May 1, 2018. In cases in which there are multiple CEOs for one company, Glassdoor recognizes the CEO(s) on the employers Glassdoor profile as of May 1, 2018. The Glassdoor review panel also relies on the employers global employee count displayed on their Overview page on Glassdoor as of May 1, 2018 to help assess eligibility. Employers have until May 1, 2018 to update their current CEO and/or global employee count (employee size) on their Glassdoor profile with a Free Employer Account . The awards also take into account various types of employment status including full-time, part-time, contract and freelance, however, intern company reviews are not considered.2. For quality of reviews , Glassdoors proprietary awards algorithm also takes into account what employees have to say that shows winning CEOs truly outshine the rest in the eyes of their employees. Quality reviews are those that help job seekers by offering insights and feedback into what its really like to work under the CEO and his/her leadership team, as well as at the company itself, including whats working well, what needs improvement, and advice to senior management, which employees are asked to share when completing a company review. 3. For consistency of reviews, Glassdoors proprietary awards algorithm also looks at trends over time as it relates to both the quantitative and qualitative insights shared by employees. In some cases, if a CEO and/or employer lacks quality and/or consistency of reviews, it can impact results and/or eligibility. Tip We encourage employers to check out free resources into what Top CEOs have in common to learn more.Commitment to integrity for all employers As part of determining award winners, Glassdoor is committed to the highest level of data integrity and reviews quality, including treating all CEOs and employers equal regardless of whether they are a customer of Glassdoor. If the Glassdoor eligibility panel suspects and/or determines official company representatives have attempted to influence employee reviews or have tampered with the process of collecting authentic, unbiased reviews, including intentional or unintentional acts that violate the Glassdoor Community Guidelines and/or Terms of Use , a CEO and/or employer may be excluded from awards consideration. Exclusion from eligibility can be triggered by such acts as, but not limited to, management attempting to leave false reviews, management coercion of employees to submit positive reviews, or other activities and/or events which could ultimately damage employees faith in the CEO, the employer, its senior leadership, and/or adversely affect its overall rating on Glassdoor. A best practice is to ask employees to leave an unbiased review every 12 months. 2018 winners will be announced in June 2018. Want more information? After 35 Years, a Change of Gears

After 35 Years, a Change of GearsAfter 35 Years, a Change of GearsData-center consultant leaves company after 35 year tenure and makes the jump to a higher growth IT group.Kurtis Tatum had been working as a consultant at Unisys for the past 35 years and enjoyed his work. Hed done many different jobs there, and for the past five years had been traveling worldwide optimizing data centers. But last June, he decided that he needed to start thinking about looking for another job. He said he needed to be proactive, rather than react to the market.Unisys had gone through five CEOs in the past five years I welches concerned about stability, he said, noting that the company had lost money every quarter for the past two-and-a-half years and colleagues had been laid off. And there was something else looming that made him take action a 55th birthday. I didnt think my job was in jeopardy. But better to find a job when I want to then to have to find a job because I had to, he said.If I had gotten laid off this year, I think it might have been mora difficult to find a job. Despite what anyone says, there is an age bias out there. So I decided I would find a job on my own terms, and use as my leverage point that I didnt have to take a job if I didnt want it.In June, he started testing the waters, looking on Ladders to see what was happening in the market. By October, he signed up for TechnologyLadder, which, he said, turned on all the benefits, and got me in touch with recruiters. Once I did that, I received quite a few inquiries. An advantage cost-cutting know-howTatum was looking for the same type of job that he had at Unisys. As a consultant, he looked at client infrastructure and processes, working with clients to determine how to reduce costs at data centers and improve service. He says that it helped in his job search that his function was to help clients reduce costs, something that is valuable in todays market. With all the mergers that companies are going through, ther es a lot of overlap of processes. Its a hot skill to have.Between October and December he interviewed with four companies. Things happened much more quickly than I expected, he said. And, while he didnt have a tight timeline for success, he said, I did want to secure another position some time in 2009.A recruiter for one of those companies, Siemens, first contacted him in late October about a position as an enterprise architect. The salary, however, was too low, and not something he was willing to pursue. He continued speaking to other companies, and then, in mid-January, the same recruiter called again about a more senior position at Siemens. Several interviews, both by phone and in person, were followed by negotiations on responsibilities and salary. He was hired in mid-March as practice lead for Siemens IT Solutions and Services.Eyeing a challenge over a salary increaseTatum notes that while salary was a sticking point for that first job back in October, I wasnt looking for a big ger salary I was looking for a job with stability and innovation and a challenge. And, ultimately, his new job came with a slight decrease in salary, although the full compensation package is slightly more. In his experience, said Tatum, salaries are down because of the economy. If people are looking for a job with the expectation that they will get their salary matched or increased, they will be disappointed, he said. His new position, which starts in mid-April, appealed to him in great part because the company is growing. They have money to invest and innovate, he said. The job is doing very similar work to what I am doing now. And they were looking to bring in senior people to help them grow. They liked the experience and skills I could bring to their team.Tatum said that while the economy has put a lot of people in his industry on edge, he believes there are a lot of jobs out there for people with the right skills. I was concerned, especially at my age, about finding another job. But it seems to me that companies are looking for senior people. They need people who can come into a job and get things going right away, he said. I know that the senior people laid off at Unisys have had a better time than the young people with less experience.Experience counts for a lot, he said. But the fruchtwein important thing is to be prepared for what could happen. If youre not looking around, if you dont pop your head out once in a while, it will be devastating when you get laid off.

Part-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of Efficiency

Part-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of EfficiencyPart-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of EfficiencyMany of the reasons for hiring parte-time employees are monetary. They work fewer hours, and they cost your company less. Depending on how many hours they work, they may not be eligible for benefits, which is another source of savings. But what are the benefits of hiring part-time employees, and what do you need to look out for? The Motivation to Work Part-time Many people chose to work part-time for personal reasons. There are children or loved ones at home to care for. They want to pursue a passion. They need the extra income. Whatever it is, those seeking part-time work have consciously made the choice to find balance in their lives and have considered how much of their time they are willing to give in order to get it. We interviewed three part-timers to find out mora Marie, a creative lead on a global absatzwirtschaft team at a large technology company, worked with her manager to cre ate a part-time role after Marie gave birth to twins. Joe, a sales program manager at a data management company, is seeking to transition his role to part-time in order to pursue his passion- his own start-up. Rachel, a life science technician at a large research university, specifically looked for part-time jobs after the birth of her second child. Part-Time Workers Think Efficiently Because their time on the job is more limited than full-time workers, the part-timers who transitioned from full-time are particularly sensitive to how much they can get done in the hours they are there. I think about work differently now, Marie said. Im much more efficient with my time, and I actually get more work done. Joe, who hasnt yet transitioned but is in the process of working out an agreement with his manager, said, My manager and I are taking the long-term initiatives and breaking them down to sets of accomplishments towards an end goal. He sees this prioritization as win-win. My manager is prioritizing the tasks/projects that most suit my skill sets and interests, he says, and it will allow me to feel in more control of how I use my time. Part-Time Workers Enjoy Their Work Workers whose off-time pursuits are different from their professional pursuits report enjoying work more. My work days are my me time where I get a break from kids and get to focus on what interests me, Rachel said. I love that I get to use my brain at work, Marie said. I really enjoy the interaction with people. Now I look forward to Mondays, but by the end of the day I miss the babies. For many college-educated professional women, the world of diapers and preschool toys lacks the intellectual stimulation they were accustomed to on the job, which makes them appreciate work even more. Part-Timers Respect Boundaries In the world of smartphones and always-on email, its easy to get overwhelmed. Part-timers in many professional fields have to make a conscious choice to turn off. An important part of why I want to transition to part-time, Joe said, is more control over how I use my time. Even so, part-time boundaries are an adjustment for those transitioning from full-time. Ive had to learn how to respect my own boundaries, Marie said. I check email only once a day on my off days. Sometimes I need to respond to urgent matters. And sometimes I feel bad about missing meetings on the days Im off. Hiring or Transitioning to Part-Time If your company is hiring part-time employees or has full-timers who are seeking a transition, consider the following Look at their motivation for working part-time. Will their off-time pursuits interfere with their ability to perform on the job, or will it complement it? Break down responsibilities and tasks. Part-time employees, particularly those with a full-time history, want to know how to structure their day. Respect the boundaries they have set. If its a job that requires being on-site, such as a lab technician, boundaries are simple. But boundaries also extend to the digital world. Set guidelines for response to emails in the off-hours. As more people seek to find balance between work and passion, and course-correct from the digital communication explosion, dont be surprised to see more requests from full-timers seeking a transition to part-time. Also consider how professional part-time employees could bring your organization the skills it needs at a cost it can afford. Introducing the seven new rules of office teamwork

Introducing the seven new rules of office gruppeworkIntroducing the seven new rules of office teamworkHave you ever been on a team project where you didnt make much of a mark?Maybe you held back because you were new to the subject matter. Perhaps the group was overrun by domineering types. Maybe you found yourself in observation mode mora than participation mode.Whatever the case, if you think youre immune to being judged by meeting performance, think again. One study showed that84 percent of U.S. employees are matrixed to some extenttoday that is, they work on multiple teamsevery day.As smaller, quickly forming and disbanding teams are becoming more the norm, research shows teams arespending increasing hours together, notlage apart. Ill be presenting one of my favorite sessions on this topic,The New Rules of Teamwork, at The Society of Women Engineers Conference (WE18,) this month. Well tackle exactly how to size up a brand new team and make a memorable impression.Heres a quick tas te of some of the strategies Ill be sharing for being a standout teamerShow All the Way UpIn our distracted world, its easy to let your attention dip and slip in a meeting. Yet, people observe your engagement level and rightfully judge you for it. Whether youre stuck on mute when called on to speak in a tele-conference or consumed with distractions while you take meeting notes on your laptop in a live meeting, people notice. Even your biggest efforts can be sabotaged when you dont get the little things, like showing all the way up, right.Encourage Shared AirtimeResearch has shownthat teams are more effective when members share airtime and make equal contributions to discussions. Yet how do you take matters into your own hands and engage a group when participation is uneven? Turn-taking and structured idea generation are just a few ways to get the most of team members. Not only does the group stand to gain from diverse thinking, your behavior can model that everyone has an equal say. Avoid CollabotageGone are the days when a classic group brainstorm was the only way to tap peoples best thinking. Rather than enforcing collaboration as the sole method for teamwork, learn to encourage a team design that allows people a mix of formats. Include people with different work styles along with introverts and extroverts alike. Learn when to suggest people go off as pairs for example, brainstorm individually or come together as a whole.Rally People Around a CauseResearch shows that teams can achieve the extraordinary when they shift mindsets from task- or project-based work to cause- or missionbased work. A mission or cause is lofty and felt palpably and it inspires people to make a big impact. Adding passion and pride to a teams work drives better, more innovative outcomes but also fuels engagement.Train People How to See YouAt every turn on the job, youre training people how to perceive you. Teams represent an ongoing way to actively shape how youre seen - both strategic ally and on an everyday level. Everything from the language you choose to the kind of physicality you bring to meetings shapes how youre known.Challenge Directly Dont Be Talked OverHow many times have you looked back and thought, I wish I stood up for myself more back there We all have such occasions but by being prepared with a range of strategies to get back in the game, you can reassert yourself with ease. You can practice interrupting interruptions and becoming more of a direct, incisive communicator.Leverage the Magic RatioWhether you realize it or not, part of your team role with any group is team steward. In fact, this distinction is often what differentiates a leader from just a team member. Be a force that harnesses positive interactions among team members and take a leadership role in building the levels of openness and psychological safety felt by the team. This article first appeared on Be Leaderly.
